Analysis Mode - Capture

You should choose Capture analysis mode when you want to analyze real-time packets on your wireless network. Capsa WiFi enables you to capture traffic from multiple APs in the same channel with one wireless adapter.

This program also supports analyzing packets in saved files, read Analysis Mode - Replay for more details.

Follow the steps below to configure this part:

  1. Select a wireless network adapter: If you have multiple wireless adapters on your machine, check the one you want to use it to capture wireless traffic. Each instance only supports capture traffic from on wireless adapter. If you have two adapters, you should open another instance to use the second one to capture traffic.
  2. Select AP(s): this panel below Adapter shows a list of APs scanned around you. This list tells you the SSID, MAC address, media, channel signal strength and the status of the encryption key you entered of the scanned APs. You should choose at least one AP to start a capture. If you want to capture traffic from multiple APs, you have to make sure they work in the same channel.
  3. Configure Wireless Network Properties: If the AP you selected is protected by encryption, or you want to give the AP an alias, double-click (or right-click > Properties) to open Wireless Network Properties dialog box (see Wireless Network Properties for more details).

You can't proceed unless you enter an encryption key for a secured AP, and if you don't enter the correct key, the program will run as well but it won't decode the encrypted packets in the right way.

AP Status

Wireless Network Properties

Double-click an AP to open this dialog box. This dialog box is used to set alias, encryption type and encryption keys for an AP. You can give the AP an alias to be easily recognized. And for an AP protected by any of the WEP, WPA or WPA2 encryption, you need to set Encryption Type and enter keys.

If you are not sure which encryption the AP is using, you can choose Auto for the Encryption Type. You should also specify the encryption key below in the Key Set fields. If it's WEP, you can specify as many as four keys for the program to decrypt the traffic.

Wireless Network Manager

In the AP list field, right-click and choose Wireless Network Manager to open this window. In this window, you can find a history list for all the wireless networks (APs) you have analyzed. You can change their encryption keys and delete the old entries.
